Tape Storage Options For Your Business
Although servers and disks are where it is at in the present day, there are still plenty of businesses that use tape storage to ensure that their data is well stored and protected. One thing that it has over the more modern applications is the fact that it is a lot cheaper than disks. Some tape cassettes can store up to five terabytes of data; for a "real world" comparison, that is five times as much as a higher-end DVR recorder. Tapes are simply stored and easy to maintain, too. In a business that needs to count costs, they are a very viable option.
Although many businesses have moved their data storage over to disks, this has not seen an end to the use of tape as a storage system. Indeed, it has no doubt done a lot to aid the market in used tape drives; as one company decides to stop using them, another company can purchase them at an ever more affordable price. They certainly do not seem set to become obsolete any time soon, given the presence of large tape libraries at businesses which are still building a profile for themselves.
Even if a majority or even all of your storage is done on disk drives in the present, there is something to be said for having as many layers of backup as you possibly can. There are plenty of acolytes of Murphy's law out there who believe that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. If you add to your disk storage a layer of tape backup, then you have the chance to recover data that may otherwise have been lost. There is good reason for businesses to take the step of using tape backup for storage.
A business that is aiming to service all of its storage needs with a limited budget should certainly be looking at the possibilities raised by having tape storage to add to any other forms. Even if your disk storage is ultra reliable there is added security in having tape media there to back it up; and if you can achieve this for as low a price as possible then it makes sense to consider it for your business.
