Large schools compete in division 1 whilst small institutions compete in these other second and third divisions. Scholarships are provided in first and second divisions to those students and athletes who excel in sports, but this is not common in third division schools. This is a great concept as seeks to assist needy kids and develop their talent at the exact same time to their personal advantage.
College football was also divided into divisions 1, 2 and 3, with the 1st division being initially divided into the I A, I AA and I AAA categories. The I AA and I A have because been renamed the Football Champions Subdivision and the Football Bowl Subdivisions in that order, whilst the I AAA category was completely scrapped and is not officially utilized.
Women were not initially represented by the NCAA. They had their personal physique which catered for all their college sporting events and scholarships. This was the AIAW, which stands for the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Ladies. This organization has since been dissolved and its role taken up by the NCAA.
The association of college sports has a few rules and regulations regarding all these who wish to play in the divisions whilst in college. Freshman year is an essential year for athletes. All freshmen who want to play have to have graduated from a high school and they should have completed the needed minimum courses, 16 in total.
In 2011, a decision was passed in which a student might sign a letter of intent asserting his intention of entering and playing in the college football league after the 1st Wednesday of the month of February. In that exact same year, the association raised the academic requirements of all athletes competing in the post season competitions.
The 2012 NCAA Bracket has its personal governing laws and guidelines by which every member institution must abide by. These laws and regulations had been established long ago in order to have fairness and order in running of the affairs of college sports. Any member that goes against the guidelines is punished.
